This book (Part I of the series) holds a very detailed overview of gull feathers and covers most of the smaller gull species (all genera except Larus) found in the Western Palearctic as breeding birds or vagrants. It is a unique work that presents high quality scans of flight and tail feathers of almost any plumage and variety found in the species treated. The book is designed for applied use and provides a guideline that enables the user to identify gull feathers encountered in the field or in collections. A helpful identification tool is the addition of a primary formula – unique to each species – which can provide helpful information for identification efforts. Scale bars allow the reader to compare feathers in their original size and grey scales are provided for colour comparisons where relevant. A second section of the book presents an overview of skulls of gull species covered in the feather section. This book does not cover distribution maps, evidence of species records, moult cycles and the identification of live gulls, as extended and detailed literature is already existent for these purposes.
The main purpose of this work is to expand the knowledge about gulls and feathers and to offer any reader an inspiring view on gulls and other birds, driven by the passion for gulls and feathers of author Joachim Menzel. Text in English and German.
Part II will be published in the future and will cover the larger gulls of genus Larus.
